Bordered on three sides by water, Belmont Shore was originally called "Belmont Shore Place" in the early 1900s, became "Belmont Shore" in the early 1920s and is now fondly known as "The Shore" by locals. Belmont Shore History Belmont Shore was originally purchased by the Huntington family and was sold to developers McGrath and Selvir in 1921. Two thirds of what was sold was underwater and marshland. Second Street was a canal and had to be filled in, along with all of the area know representing Belmont Shore, Naples, Belmont Park and the Peninsula. This was a huge undertaking. There was 200 million cubic yards of mud dredged from Alamitos Bay. Along with the mud came an interesting assortment of bones, broken dishes, cans and the like. Who knows what treasures you may find if you dig under your home? This area became an overnight sensation, feeding the desires of homeowners who wanted to be close to The Shore and Long Beach's "Wonder Beach".
